By sticking together, speaking up and speaking out, Janitors in Columbus, Ohio members of SEIU Local 1, made historic gains which include:
- Raises from $13/hr to $15.50/hr, a 19.2% increase, just in the first year of the contract!
- Over the life of the 3 year contract, this means thousands of dollars in the pockets of these hardworking Janitors.
- The minimum rate for workers with 1+ years on the job is moving from $13.00 to $17.25 by 1/1/25 or $4.25/hour in less than three years. Through this win, Janitors will be able to put millions of dollars into their communities and the local economy.
“After several months of vigorous campaigning, I am so proud that my fellow janitors and I unanimously voted for this strong new contract,” said Janitor Jessica Spencer. “Throughout the pandemic, we essential janitors risked our health and safety to ensure Columbus was functioning and families stayed safe. By coming together, we won the respect, protection and pay we deserve and need to support our families.”
The win these Janitors fought for is not just transformative in their workplace, but a transformation for their families and their communities as well.
