Contracted Janitors and Security Officers, members of SEIU USWW, in Los Angeles County have been speaking out, rallying and fighting for years to get access to affordable healthcare and they have WON!

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved 100% employer paid healthcare for about 2,000 contracted workers at LAC+USC, Harbor-UCLA, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. The impact of this vote will change the lives of contracted Janitors like Maria Blanco.

Maria Blanco is a member of SEIU USWW and has been a part of the fight to win healthcare for herself and her fellow co-workers. Now, Maria can now breathe a little easier. Maria works at LAC+USC Medical Center, where she has been for 14 years and does not have access to affordable insurance to deal with her diabetes. In order to deal with her diabetes, Maria has had to rely on going to the emergency room- “Just last year, I’ve gone to the emergency room three times — gravely ill.”

Depending on emergency room services is no way for essential workers to live and now they will not have to. These Contracted Janitors have shown that when you stick together and don’t give up you can win any fight!
